We are FIRST Robotics Competition Team 4118, the Roaring Riptide of P.K. Yonge High School in Gainesville, Florida. As a FIRST team we are more than a robotics club; we are community activists focusing our efforts on bringing the wonder of science and technology to all children in our community regardless of their economic status. The team was founded in 2012 and has grown every year. Currently, our team consists of 23 students ranging from ages 13 to 18 as well as 15 mentors which include UF graduate and undergraduate students, professional engineers, and UF professors.
What is FIRST
FIRST is a program whose mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, teamwork, and leadership. It was founded in 1989 by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway. Dean is a tireless advocate of science and technology. His passion and determination to help young people discover the excitement and rewards of science and technology are the cornerstones of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).
The Roaring Riptide provides a great opportunity for students interested in math and science. However, the annual cost of operating such a successful club is approximately $54,000, making it unsustainable without the gracious support of the community.
